Fabulous Day on the Moor with Lionel!

"My husband and I decided not to rent a car while in Exeter but very much wanted to see Dartmoor.  I found Lionel’s website through a google search – what a stroke of luck that was!  Our day-long tour was absolutely amazing from start to finish.  We decided to leave the itinerary totally up to Lionel as the “resident expert” and he certainly did not disappoint!  

We saw so much it’s taken me ages to go through all my photos.  Lionel struck a perfect balance between driving us around in comfort and safety on those narrow roads and leading us on mini-hikes to show us everything from wild ponies to churches to standing stones (too many things to list!), on the gorgeous landscape, all the while regaling us with tales of the Moor.  

If we had driven around on our own we never would have had the rich experience we did as Lionel brought it to life with all his stories and we would have missed out on the wonderful lunch we had at the historic inn he chose for us.  If you’re looking for the best way to spend the day on Dartmoor, don’t hesitate to get in touch with Lionel.  If we’re lucky enough to be back that way some day we’ll call him again!”

A good experience with Lionel is an understatement

"To say my travel partner and I had a good experience with Lionel is an understatement.  The experience started when I got a prompt, informative reply to my questions and has continued through today because I keep going back to memories of the day. We were picked up from our hotel right on time in an immaculate vehicle that was well driven. 

Lionel entertained us with history, tales and legends for the rest of the day as we visited tors, stone circles, churches and villages.  He stopped for photos whenever we wished.  Lionel is also somewhat of a magician because he provided us with a beautiful blue sky day sandwiched between some of the worst weather the UK has to offer.  We took this tour on March 13. Enjoyable is an inadequate word.   Next time I am bringing my husband….he will go nuts for the photography.”

I enjoyed my Dartmoor trip with you

"Hello Lionel, I’m sure I left you in no doubt as to how much I enjoyed my Dartmoor trip with you, a day I remember with great pleasure. I got some photos that I enjoy looking at, not up to your standard but still a pleasure to have. I’d enjoy giving you a glowing write-up on Tripadvisor but I got the impression you aren’t touting for business-shall I go ahead?

Now that my going away is over for this year I like to look back on my travels and pass on experiences. I did two taxi tours in the Highlands last week from Fort William-again, some wonderful scenery, but between you and me the driver wasn’t quite such  good company as you were!-a bit of an irritable motorist at times, though it must be hard not to be.. I may not get another chance to see so much of the Moor and probably quite rare to have such splendid weather. Attaching a few pics, I’m sure you won’t view them too critically!”

Fantastic tour on Dartmoor

"Time flies and already more than two months have passed since you took us on the fantastic tour on Dartmoor.

The summer months went passed so quickly. Our oldest daughter got married and we have spent the rest of the holiday with family in Norway and Sweden

We`d just like to thank you for an exciting day with so many interesting highlights. You`re an excellent guide with a lot of knowledge – and a pleasant a way to share it. You even had the weather under control and gave us a touch of that famous Dartmoor fog as well as a bit of rain – and sun.

We had a wonderful stay in Torquay and spent a few hours in the Abbey and in Cockington the day after our tour.

We do hope we will have a chance to visit Devon again in years to come.”

Superb!

"Just wanted to say that I thought ,the trip last Friday was superb, there was so much to see even though it did get wet in the afternoon!
Visiting the various tors and I was particularly taken with Buckland in the Moor, such a pretty place.
But on the whole such an experience wherever you went.
I will be doing this trip again sometime and will definately be telling friends about this trip.”

Marvellous day out on Dartmoor

"I am now back in Leicester and my friend, Marcia, has travelled on with her husband to Geneva. However, though our UK holiday is over, we both wanted to thank you very much for the marvellous day out on Dartmoor that you provided for us last Sunday. The sights we saw and the things we learned that day will stay with us for some considerable time to come.

We were both very impressed with the way in which you were able to combine all the sites we ourselves were interested in with others we knew little about like St Peters at Buckland on the Moor, (a little gem of a church); the granite railway and the stone burial chamber which we saw in the last part of our tour.

Thank you also for being such a safe and thoughtful driver as well as a great raconteur about the sites on the Moor and the people who had lived there. You made it very memorable for us.

Two Interesting and Informative Days on Dartmoor

"Lionel would be an interesting companion anywhere but I spent two days with him on Dartmoor. His knowledge of the Moor is impressive and delivered in a way that is easy to absorb.

I know Dartmoor reasonably well – from “challenging” Army experiences in the 1960s and numerous visits since. However, on this trip, I wanted to do more than simply re-visit old haunts and re-live old memories. Thanks to Lionel I achieved my goal. He left me with an appreciation of 4,000+ years of history, as countless people struggled on the Moor – from ancient tribes to generations of miners and agricultural workers."

Wonderful introduction to Dartmoor, Devon

"I booked a tour with Lionel after finding him on Tripadvisor. This was our first visit to Devon so wanted to make the most of it without the hassle of driving ourselves.

Lionel picked us up from our holiday park at 9.15am, he was on time and very pleasant. Lionel was extremely informative throughout the day and told us many stories and interesting facts. We visited so many places throughout the day – we climbed up tors, visited churches, bridges saw the wild ponies, visited a grave on the side of a road.

We had a picnic lunch in a pound with fantastic scenery.

Lionel dropped us off at 5.15pm. We had a brilliant day and learnt so much. I would highly recommend this tour. After driving to Devon it was great to leave the car at home and have an educated local TO show you the best bits of Dartmoor."
